TOLEDO, Ohio – Each semester, University of Toledo students can receive legal services for $10.
Students Legal Services, INC. (SLSI) provides licensed attorneys who are available to consult, represent, and refer with students Monday through Friday in Lancelot Thompson Student Union Room 3504, said Tresa Anderson, a SLSI paralegal.
The general practice law firm can assist in legal matters including consumer, housing, accident cases, and traffic.
The most common matter students come in for is landlord and tenant issues such as signing leases, Anderson said.
Due to conflict of interest, SILI cannot provide advice or representation in matters concerning actions between:
* Students and the university.
* Students.
* Board of Regents, Board of Trustees, faculty, or staff of the university.
* State officers or agency arising out of the performance of the officer or agency official duties.
* Law enforcement officers arising out of the performance of their office.
Representation for other matters such as immigration and felonies are also not provided by the program because those matters require specific expertise not covered by the general practice, Anderson said.
If representation cannot be provided by the program, SILI can still advise whether an individual needs an attorney and will provide a referral to other counsels in the area.
However, 30 percent of students opt to waive the fee becoming ineligible for services, Anderson said.
“As a struggling college student, financials sometimes just get the best of us, and I saw a free $20 to save,” Noah Fox, a UT sophomore studying social work, said.
Living locally, if anything was to happen, he would probably go to his parents first, but it still a great resource to have, Fox said.
“For somebody that doesn’t have that drive ten minutes down the street to see their parents, like, if there’s people out here that wants to help us, that’s awesome”.
Students have until the end of the add/drop period to waive the legal free though their myUT Portal.
If the fee is waived, students will not be able to receive services until the following semester after paying that semester’s fee.
