Congratulations UT:10 News Staff!
In March 2012, UT:10 News received a 2011 Mark of Excellence Award for Best Overall TV News Program from the Society of Professional Journalists for Region 4, which includes all Universities in Ohio, West Virginia, Western Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana. This is the third year in a row that we have earned first-place honors for Best Overall TV Newscast in our region!
This year, we also received a SPJ Region 4 first place Mark of Excellence Award for Television Breaking News Reporting for a package done in the Fall of 2011 by Ashley Karsten & Mckenzie Kuehnlein that covered the FBI's raids of several local IHOP restaurants. Additionally, Ashley Karsten received a Region 4 second place Mark of Excellence Award for Television Sports Photography for her Fall 2011 coverage of UT Rocket Football & Rocket Women's Soccer.
In October 2011, UT:10 News Producers Ashley Karsten and Carina Cornieles traveled to Orlando, Florida for the College Broadcasters Inc. annual conference. There UT:10 News was nominated for Best Sportscast and Best Special Broadcast and won a CBI Award for Best Special Broadcast! This marks the second year in a row that UT:10 News has been nominated for and won national awards. Congratulations to our producers, student reporters, and student technical personnel from the Spring 2011 TV Journalism class who produced the UT:10 News "UT Myths & Legends" Special Broadcast that received the award!

In the Summer of 2011, UT:10 News was named "2010 Mark of Excellence Award National Finalist" in the Best All-Around Television Newscast category by the Society of Professional Journalists! (That means we placed 2nd in the nation among all 4-year Colleges and Universities!)
Congratulations to our producers, student reporting staff, and student technical personnel from the Spring & Fall 2010 semesters. SPJ requires several newscast samples spanning the calendar year, and all of the students involved in both 2010 semesters of the TV Journalism class contributed to this great honor. |
2010 Best College Newscast in the Country
In the Spring of 2010, student producers Ashley Roth & Philipp Levering, along with student director Heather Schramm and Faculty Advisor & Instructor, Dr. Jackie Layng flew to Los Angeles for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences College Television Awards.
The College Television Awards are the student equivalent of the professional "Emmys," and at the red-carpet gala, UT:10 News received first place in the "Newscast" category. Ashley & Phil on the red carpet immediately after receiving the first-place award.
